What are MADs/YTPMVs?
Let’s start with YTPMV. The name YTPMV stands for YouTube Poop Music Video. This is when clips shows are spliced together to sync with music (usually from a video game) to make a video. These videos use a variety of sources, usually from cartoons or anime, but really anything can be used. MAD is basically the same thing, although not always, as MADs can sometimes be clips spliced to make a small joke. For more information on MADs, you can look at it’s Wikipedia page here.
There is mostly no difference between the two terms (although MAD covers a wider base), but the main difference is that MADs are from Japan, YTPMVs are from the West.
Why make them?
Because why not? They’re fun and sometimes very well done.
How are they made?
Depends on the maker. We don’t really know (we aren’t in the business), but most YTPMV makers use Sony Vegas 10.
When were they first made?
It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when this started but my best guess is Spring/Summer of 2006 with the increased interest in Youtube Poop which probably would’ve given rise to a small form of YTPMV, and the creation of Nico Nico Douga as a Japanese counterpart to Youtube. The MAD/YTPMV as it is known today appeared around 2007/8 with the rise of the RED ZONE fad.
Who makes them?
A LOT of people. It’s hard to really name specifics but if you want a good idea of who to start with on Youtube, try KinkyOats, XLovesMiku, BowenKainZ, anonymide and Ricemaster3. The first three make YTPMVs, the last two upload MADs from Nico Nico Douga.
